The fastest way from Delhi to Agra is the train: the Gatimaan Express and the Vande Bharat both cover the route in about 1 hour 40 minutes, with seats from ₹605 per person. A private car takes roughly 3 to 4 hours each way on the Yamuna Expressway and costs about ₹2,800 to ₹5,500 per vehicle, which becomes cheaper per person with a group. A guided private day tour bundles the car, a licensed guide and optionally entry tickets and lunch into a single 11 to 12 hour day.
For most first-time visitors, I recommend the private car with a guide because it removes the logistics of the Taj Mahal day. If you're travelling light, on a tight budget, or comfortable navigating alone, the train is excellent. Both are good choices; they solve different problems.
One rule applies to all three: the Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors on Fridays, so plan your Agra day for any other day of the week.
Train fares and timings below come from ConfirmTkt, an IRCTC-authorised booking partner, and were checked on 16 October 2026 for travel on 17 October. Cab rates come from published cab-operator fare charts, and tour inclusions come from tour listings I reviewed. Prices move, so confirm before you book.
Agra is roughly 200 to 230 kilometres from Delhi, depending on where you start and which route you take. By rail, the published distance is about 197 km. By road, operators quote figures between roughly 165 and 233 km for the main route, depending on where in Delhi or Noida the journey begins.
By road, the standard route is the six-lane Yamuna Expressway, entered via Noida and Greater Noida. It's signal-free and fast, with a posted limit of about 100 km/h. The older highway route through Mathura is slower and mainly useful if you want to add a stop along the way.
By rail, trains run from the main Delhi stations to Agra Cantt, the station most convenient for the Taj Mahal. Delhi has several departure stations, and the fastest trains leave from Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi.

A detail that trips people up: Shatabdi 12004 also leaves New Delhi in the early morning, but it ends at Tundla Junction rather than Agra Cantt. Check the destination station before you book, or you'll arrive in the wrong place.
Return journey: The Gatimaan return (12049) is published as leaving Agra Cantt around 17:50 and reaching Hazrat Nizamuddin around 19:30. Confirm the current return timetable on IRCTC when you book, since services and days of operation can change.
Published cab fare charts from operators I reviewed in October 2026 show a range, not a single number:
The per-person maths changes the picture. An Innova at about ₹4,200 shared by four people works out to around ₹1,050 each one way, which can undercut the executive-class train and sit close to the chair-car fare, while giving you door-to-door service. For a solo traveller, though, the train is far cheaper.
A guided tour is the most common choice for first-time visitors, and for good reason: it turns a transport problem into a planned day.
Based on the private day-trip listings I reviewed, a typical Delhi to Agra private tour includes:
Commonly offered as options or upgrades:
Commonly not included:
Always confirm the exact inclusions before paying. Two tours with the same headline price can differ by thousands of rupees once tickets and meals are added or removed.
The official foreigner ticket for the Taj Mahal is ₹1,100, plus ₹200 to enter the main mausoleum, so ₹1,300 in total, per the official Taj Mahal website. Agra Fort and the Baby Taj have separate entry fees on the official ticketing pages. If your tour says "entry tickets included", ask which monuments, and whether the mausoleum add-on is covered.
For the full rules on tickets, security and photography, see our Taj Mahal visitor guide.
You can book a private Agra day trip directly with us, or compare marketplace listings such as GetYourGuide.
Whichever you choose, compare inclusions line by line rather than headline price.
These are my planning estimates, not published timetables, because traffic and your starting point change everything:
|
Option |
Each Way (Door to Door) |
What Drives the Variation |
|
Train (Gatimaan/Vande Bharat) |
About 3 to 3.5 hours |
Reaching the Delhi station, arriving early, Agra Cantt to Taj transfer |
|
Private car |
About 3.5 to 4.5 hours |
Delhi traffic, expressway speed, stops |
|
Guided private tour |
About 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way, plus sightseeing |
Same as car, with your guide meeting you in Agra |
In the cooler months from roughly December into January, fog can slow both trains and road traffic, so build in buffer time if you have a flight to catch afterwards.
|
Your Situation |
My Recommendation |
|
First-time visitor, want zero logistics |
Guided private tour |
|
Travelling solo on a budget |
Train |
|
Couple, want comfort and flexibility |
Private car with guide, or train plus a local guide in Agra |
|
Family of 4 to 6 |
Private car (cost per person drops) |
|
Short on time, only a day to spare |
Early Vande Bharat or Gatimaan out, evening Gatimaan back |
|
Want sunrise at the Taj Mahal |
Private car with an early pickup, or an overnight stay in Agra |
|
Continuing to Jaipur afterwards |
Private car (luggage-friendly) or a Golden Triangle tour |
|
Prefer to stay in Agra overnight |
Train or car one way, onward by road to Jaipur |
If I had to name one default for most first-time visitors, it's the private guided tour. If you're confident, it's the morning train out and the evening train back.
1. Choosing a Friday: The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors on Fridays. Check the day before you book anything.
2. Booking the wrong train: Some trains end at Tundla, not Agra Cantt. Always check the arrival station.
3. Assuming every train runs daily: The Gatimaan and Vande Bharat each skip certain days, so check the weekly schedule.
4. Booking late: Fast trains fill up. Reserve as early as the booking window allows.
5. Comparing headline prices only: A cheaper tour that excludes tickets and meals may cost more in the end.
6. Forgetting the last leg: After the train, you still need transport to the Taj Mahal.
7. Ignoring buffer time: Fog, traffic and security queues add up. Don't schedule a tight same-day flight home.
8. Skipping the day-of-week check for night viewing: Night viewing happens only around the full moon and is closed on Fridays.
By train: Early Vande Bharat or Gatimaan from Delhi, hire a licensed guide at the monument, visit the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then take the evening Gatimaan back. It's efficient, but the return train sets a hard deadline.
By private tour: Hotel pickup in Delhi, drive via the Yamuna Expressway, Taj Mahal with your guide, lunch, Agra Fort and the Baby Taj, then drive back. It's the most relaxed way to see three monuments in one day.
There isn't a single "best" way from Delhi to Agra, only the best way for the day you want. Take the train if you want speed and a low price. Take a private car if you want comfort and flexibility. Take a guided tour if you'd rather spend your energy on the Taj Mahal than on timetables.
If you'd like help choosing, or you're planning to continue on to Jaipur and Rajasthan, message me directly and I'll build a route around your dates, the Friday closure and your pace.

Q: What is the fastest way to get from Delhi to Agra?
The fastest option is the Gatimaan Express or the Vande Bharat, both listed at about 1 hour 40 minutes. Door to door, the train is typically still quicker than a car, though not by as much as the timetable suggests.
Q: How much is a train from Delhi to Agra?
As listed for travel on 17 October 2026, chair-car seats start at ₹605 on the Vande Bharat and Shatabdi, ₹765 on the Gatimaan, and ₹395 on the slower Taj Express. Executive class runs from ₹960 to ₹1,495.
Q: How long does a car take from Delhi to Agra?
Plan on 3 to 4 hours each way via the Yamuna Expressway, depending on traffic and your starting point.
Q: How much does a private cab cost from Delhi to Agra?
Published operator rates run roughly ₹2,800 to ₹3,500 one way for a sedan and ₹4,200 to ₹5,500 for an Innova-type SUV, with same-day round trips costing more. Always confirm whether tolls and parking are included.
Q: Is it worth doing Delhi to Agra as a day trip?
Yes, if you start early. Both the train and a private car make a same-day visit realistic, though it's a long day. Staying overnight lets you see the Taj Mahal at sunrise without the early start.
Q: Which is better, the train or a private car?
The train is faster and cheaper for solo travellers and couples. A private car is better for families and groups, and for anyone who wants door-to-door convenience. A guided tour adds the guide and the planning.
Q: What does a private Taj Mahal tour from Delhi include?
Typically a private air-conditioned car, driver and licensed guide, with tolls and parking often covered. Monument tickets and lunch are usually optional extras, and gratuities are usually separate.
Q: Can I do Agra on the way to Jaipur instead of a round trip?
Yes. Many travellers go Delhi to Agra to Jaipur by road as part of a Golden Triangle route, which avoids a return trip to Delhi.
